Over the past year, the data team at Riot Games has been using Chef to both configure instances in Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and build AMIs. With Chef as an integral part of the workflow, we’ve autoscaled thousands of instances in support of the data pipeline for League of Legends and have found that Chef doesn’t always play perfectly in the world of autoscaling groups and ephemeral instances. Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) and Amazon DynamoDB build together a really fast, reliable and scalable layer to receive and process high volumes of messages based on its distributed and high available architecture. We propose a full system that would handle any volume of data or level of throughput, without losing messages or requiring other services to be always available. Also, it enables applications to process messages asynchronously and includes more compute resources based on the number of messages enqueued. The whole architecture helps applications reach predefined SLAs as we can add more workers to improve the whole performance.Ê In addition, it decreases the total costs because we use new workers briefly and only when they are required.

We walk you through the journey that Netflix underwent to redesign and operate our service to achieve this lofty goal. Using the principles of isolation and redundancy, ourÊdestination is a fully redundant active-active deployment architecture where end users can be served out of multiple AWS regions. If one region fails, another can quickly take its place. Along the way, we’ll explore our “Isthmus” architecture, a stepping stone toward full active-active deployment where only the edge services are redundantly deployed to multiple regions. By turning the data center into an API, AWS has enabled Sumo Logic to build a very large scale IT operational analytics platform as a service at unprecedented scale and velocity. Based around Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3, the Sumo Logic system is ingesting many terabytes of unstructured log data a day while at the same time delivering real-time dashboards and supporting hundreds of thousands of queries against the collected data. When co-founder and CTO Christian Beedgen started Sumo Logic, it was obvious that the service would have to scale quickly and elastically, and AWS has been providing the perfect infrastructure for this endeavor from the start.Ê In this talk, Christian dives into the core Sumo Logic architecture and explains which AWS services are making Sumo Logic possible. Based around an in-house developed automation and continuous deployment system, Sumo Logic is leveraging Amazon S3 in particular for large-scale data management and Amazon DynamoDB for cluster configuration management. By relying on automation, Sumo Logic is also able to perform sophisticated staging of new code for rapid deployment.
